400 million dollars. That’d be a handsome boxoffice tally against any measurement metrics. That figure, as perhaps most are aware by now, was only just the pricetag of James Cameron’s new epic Avatar. Yesterday, it was reported that in just 3 weeks the movie has grossed over a billion dollars in ticket sales. To use the word ’shocking’ would be a similarly epic understatement.
It seems to have becomeĀ almostĀ as politically correct as the holocaust to utter no bad about the film. Without a doubt, the sheer detail of thought and imagination behind an entirely new planet, species of plants and animals and the majorly African-inspired humanoid natives commands appreciation. Kudos to the detail-obsessed Cameron to commision linguistic experts to create an entirely new language (Na’vi) with several dialects!
Now that’s all out of the way, the film was certainly more gimmick than soul. The IMAX experience is fantastic for all of ten minutes, following which your eyes can’t quite tell the difference between 2 or 3-D. The story lay thinner than the blue-bodied humanoids of the film. The context of a quasi-real reflection of current day political/commercial pursuits (think Iraq or Africa) but set across planets hits home well.
Despite all, the film lacks the X factor to make it a contemporary classic.

Although I share some of your points I consider classics those productions, ( movies, cinema,TV, web ) that create somehow a before and an after.
Avatar does this, despite the box office.
